FROM ANCIENT KINGDOMS TO SOVIET LEGACIES
On the second day of our tour, after breakfast at our hotel in the morning, we depart from the Black Sea coast and begin our journey towards the interior of Georgia. Our route, proceeding via Batumi, leads us to Kutaisi, the country's second-largest city after Tbilisi, which has historically been one of its major centers. This enjoyable journey, accompanied by green valleys and mountain views, allows us to closely experience Georgia's natural fabric. Upon arrival in Kutaisi, we take a short exploration of the city center and begin strolling among structures reflecting the region's historical identity. Next, we visit the Bagrati Cathedral, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and considered one of the most important works of medieval Georgian architecture. This magnificent structure, which has witnessed centuries of kingdoms and faiths, appears before us as a powerful symbol of the Georgian Orthodox tradition and the country's historical continuity. We then turn our route to Gori, the city where a name that left an indelible mark on 20th-century world history was born. Along the way, we will stop for a short extra lunch break and rest at a suitable facility. In this city known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader of Georgian origin, Josif Stalin, we visit the Stalin Museum. During our museum tour, we have the opportunity to see the modest wooden hut where Stalin was born in 1878 and spent his early childhood years (Stalin's House), along with his personal belongings and documents shedding light on his political life. Additionally, the special Pullman carriage used by Stalin during official travels, reflecting the grandeur of that era, becomes one of the most striking parts of the visit. This stop enables us to witness not only Georgia's ancient past but also its more recent history. After the museum visit, departing from Gori, we head towards Mtskheta, accepted as the heart of Georgian history and Christianity and also the country's former capital. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in this sacred city, we visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, built in the 11th century. As one of Georgia's most important religious buildings, this cathedral is believed according to the Georgian Orthodox faith to be the place where the holy robe of Jesus Christ is kept and holds great spiritual value for the country.
